How one takes this is entirely up to them, but Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said that he “expects” 27-year-old big man Nikola Pekovic to return to the Wolves this coming season.
Per Darren Wolfson:
Flip said again he expects Pek back. Will see him next week in Europe. He’ll see Rubio Saturday in Miami.
Pekovic is of course a restricted free agent, so, was Saunders suggestion of Pek returning a sign that he’s willing to match any offer Pekovic may receive? Hard to tell, but clearly, he feels the Yugoslavia native will be back in Minnesota next season.
Of course, that’s a lot easier said than done as Pekovic averaged 16 points with nearly 9 rebounds a game on 52% shooting this season, all while playing solid defense. We saw last year what Omar Asik commanded in free agency (3 year, $25 million) and it’s hard to think that Pekovic wont get a similar, if not more lucrative deal from a team desperate for size in their frontcourt.
