While the Utah Jazz may have lost Jeff Hornacek to the Phoenix Suns, they’re planning to fortify their bench with another former Jazz great – The Mailman.

Karl Malone announced yesterday on local Utah radio that he would be joining the Jazz as a special assistant, his role namely to work with the young Jazz big men.

Per Jody Genessy:

Karl Malone just announced on Jazz radio that he will be helping to coach Utah’s big men in a part-time capacity.

It wasn’t just Jazz CEO Greg Miller pushing for Malone’s return either as young forward Derrick Favors also lobbied for the Mailman’s return:

Jazz power forward Derrick Favors’ desire to improve was one of the impetuses leading to Malone landing a role he’s lobbied for in the past. Favors, who turns 22 in July, reached out to management in hopes of receiving personal tutoring from The Mailman this offseason.

“You can’t find too many better people to work with your bigs,” Favors’ agent, Wallace Prather, said. “I think it’s great for everybody involved — from Derrick, to Enes (Kanter), to Jeremy (Evans) to whoever else finds their way into the organization.”
