The Boston Bruins were dragged into a double overtime game against the Pittsburgh Penguins but managed to pound out a win that puts them up 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. However while the road to the Stanley Cup may be paved, reaching the Cup just got a lot harder. Per a report from ESPN Boston’s Joe McDonald, Bruins center Gregory Campbell suffered a broken leg in Game 3 and will be out the remainder of the postseason.

"Boston Bruins forward Gregory Campbell suffered a broken right leg and is done for the season, according to a team source. Campbell suffered the injury when he blocked a slap shot by the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin during a Pittsburgh power play in the second period of Wednesday’s 2-1 double overtime victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals at TD Garden."

To be fair, the Bruins failed to fully elaborate on the extent of Campbell’s injury but they did say that it was a serious one. If Campbell’s leg is indeed broken, which seems the case here, it will mean that the Bruins are losing a guy who regularly sacrificed his body for the sake of the team. McDonald’s piece features numerous quotes from Bruins’ players praising Campbell’s ability to put himself in the way of the puck to block shots before they get to netminder Tuukka Rask.

Zdeno Chara noted that lesser players would have dropped to the ice and refused to move with a broken leg, but Campbell kept skating on one leg to try and help the Bruins on the penalty kill.

“He’s a man that he does whatever the team needs, and he’s willing to sacrifice his body,” Chara said, via McDonald and ESPN Boston. “For sure it was an outstanding block by him and you saw that the rest of the time he spent on that kill he was willing to do whatever he could on that one leg, so this one is for sure for him.”

He’s a guy the Bruins will miss on the ice, but Campbell is a sample size of what the entire team is about and they’re playing for more than just the Cup now with Campbell’s sacrifice fresh in their minds moving forward.
