Memphis Grizzlies Fire Lionel Hollins: Huge Mistake for the Franchise

The Memphis Grizzlies will not be renewing the contract of head coach Lionel Hollins. This comes just days after the Denver Nuggets let long time coach George Karl go. I have a strong suspicion that the two are linked.

On tonight’s show, I argue that the Grizzlies made a big mistake in firing Hollins. I run down playoff stats for both Karl and Hollins, and wonder aloud if Memphis would be firing one coach who could not take the team to the NBA Finals for another who will ultimately fail to do it either.

I also look at the past 25 years of the NBA Finals and ask if any small market team outside of San Antonio can really compete to be the leagues best team. If the last quarter century is any indication, small market teams like The Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies should probably be happy with being quality playoff teams.
