The Dallas Stars learned on Thursday morning that 23-year-old prospect Scott Winkler has passed away at his home in Norway. Winkler was set to join AHL Texas for the 2013-14 season after finishing his time at Colorado College before his unfortunate passing. According to Colorado College athletic director Ken Ralph, the cause of Winkler’s death is unkown.
The teams assistant general manager Les Jackson was the first to respond, via the Dallas Morning News.
“It’s just such a shock and so sad,’’ Jackson said. “He was a good kid with a bright future, and our thoughts go out to his family.’’
Winkler was drafted in the third round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Stars general manager Jim Nill released a statement regarding Winkler’s passing as soon as he learned about his passing.
“The Dallas Stars are heartbroken to hear about Scott’s passing,”Nill said. “Scott was a wonderful young man with great character and a bright future.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
