Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett was scheduled to take the mound on Saturday for a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but there has been a change of plans. The team announced today that Burnett would be placed on the 15-day disabled list while he deals with a strained right calf. The placement on the DL is retroactive to June 9.
No replacement has been named for Burnett’s Saturday slot.
Burnett should be ready go by the end of the month, but there is no set time frame of details on the severity of Burnett’s injury, though it doesn’t appear to be a major concern — at least the Pirates will hope that is the case.
So far this season, Burnett has a record of 4-6 with a 3.12 ERA and 99 strikeouts, which currently ranks as the sixth most in Major League Baseball.
The Pirates are also concerned about the health of outfielder Starline Marte, who was a late scratch from tonight’s game because of a sore rib cage.
