Seattle Sounders Lose Steve Zakuani For 6-8 Weeks After Sports Hernia Surgery

You have to feel bad for Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Steve Zakuani. After missing most of the past two seasons due to a leg injury, Zakuani was ready for his comeback season, but now he will once again miss significant time because of a recent surgery earlier in the week.

From Joshua Mayers of the Seattle Times:

Sounders FC’s Steve Zakuani, as expected, underwent surgery for a sports hernia Tuesday. The team confirmed Wednesday that the procedure, performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, was “successful” and went as scheduled.

Recovery time for the injury is expected to be six to eight weeks. It certainly isn’t what Zakuani had in mind for his comeback year.

The good news for Seattle is that they won’t exactly miss Zakuani’s production on the pitch. This season, he has only racked up one assist and two shots on goal.

Hopefully Zakuani can make a full and speedy recovery, but it will be interesting to see if the Sounders automatically reinsert him in the lineup when he returns.
