The featured bout at UFC 161 was a light heavyweight match up between Canada’s own Ryan Jimmo and Croatia’s Igor Pokrajac. Both men were looking to rebound from their recent losses, and Jimmo was hoping to replicate the success he had during his last appearance in Canada when he was able to score a seven second knockout over Anthony Perosh.
Jimmo and Pokrajac were on the verge of entering the top ten mix with a win, so the emotions were high entering the octagon.
The Canadian was unable to duplicate his quick knockout success in his return to Canada, but he controlled Pokrajac up against the cage before being separated by referee Yves Lavigne. Pokrajac charged Jimmo looking for the takedown, but Jimmo was able to fight it off and land some punches before being separated once again.
Lavigne seemed eager to separate the fighters, but both men continued to go about their strategies despite the referee interference.
Just before the end of Round 1, Pokrajac was able to land a huge shot that stunned Jimmo, but the two tied up in the clinch and Jimmo was able to survive the remainder of the round.
Both fighters were more patient to start the second round, and Jimmo took the opportunity to land a big shot that dropped Pokrajac. Jimmo was unable to finish Pokrajac with the following exchange, but he took him to the mat and looked to inflict some damage from inside of the Croatian’s guard. Jimmo landed some short punches and elbows, but no major damage was inflicted from the dominant position.
Jimmo and Pokrajac rode out the position until the buzzer sounded to complete a rather uneventful second round after the initial knock down.
In the third round, Jimmo once again landed in Pokrajac’s guard as he looked to grind out the final five minutes of the fight. The only action came when Pokrajac was able to sneak in a guillotine choke which he was able to lock in. Jimmo was able to weather the storm and once again be in control of the position as he landed a few pitter patter punches throughout the final minute of the fight.
The fight ended with some boo birds from the crowd, before the judges announced that Ryan Jimmo was the winner via unanimous decision — 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.
