Roy Nelson is one tough dude and he put that on display again Saturday night. Maybe it is the silly beard that helps him out, but there is no denying Big Country’s chin. Sure, he got dominated by up and comer Stipe Miocic, but Nelson was also able to set an all-time UFC record while getting his ass whooped.
During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White announced that Nelson now has absorbed the most strikes in his UFC career without being knocked out. When you consider that he has been in the cage with the likes of Junior Dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum, Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop, that is quite the accomplishment.
The exact number of absorbed strikes in his UFC career is 487.
That’s gotta leave a mark.
When you look back at Nelson’s record, he has Junior Dos Santos and Stipe Miocic to thank for a large portion of those blows.
Nelson now faces some contract uncertainty after finishing the final fight of his deal in the loss to Miocic, so we will have to wait to see if he will return to the octagon and have a chance to extend that record.
It may not be the most flattering record, but at least Nelson’s name is marked down in history.
