The Florida Panthers would like to re-sign 3o-year-old center Stephen Weiss, but it sounds like that’s going to be a tough task. Teams like the Nashville Predators are expected to enter the free agent sweepstakes for the veteran forward, and the Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs have also showed interest. Elliotte Friedman recently reported on “Hockey Night in Canada” that the Detroit Red Wings are now among the teams interested in Stephen Weiss.
Weiss is a former 60-point scorer and notched 57 points as recently as 2011. He has played in Florida for his entire career to this point, and the Panthers would undoubtedly love to keep their long-time center. But, of course, other teams would undoubtedly love to get their hands on a productive veteran, and the Red Wings are just the latest team to show interest.
Unrestricted free agency is set for the 5th of July, so the Panthers have a window of time to lock of Weiss before the other teams can try and pounce on him once the veil is lifted. The Panthers have the best chance of signing Weiss, because they have this period to negotiate with him, and it also sounds like Weiss would like to stay with the Panthers and continue his career with the team.
