Detroit Tigers Place Anibal Sanchez, Alex Avila On Disabled List

Earlier today the Detroit Tigers expressed concern about starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez. Their concern was well warranted as they’ve placed him on the disabled list this afternoon with a right shoulder strain.

The move with be retroactive to yesterday, June 16th.

Per the Detroit Tigers Twitter account:

The #Tigers placed Anibal Sanchez on the DL retro to 6/16 w/ right shoulder strain. Alex Avila also placed on DL w/ left forearm contusion.

Sanchez was scratched from start last week after experiencing shoulder soreness and just lasted a few innings this weekend during his start on Saturday.

The best move would have probably been to place Sanchez on the disabled list during the first sign of trouble or to allow him more “rest” but the Tigers are taking no chances now.

In addition to Sanchez, the Tigers also placed battery mate Alex Avila on the disabled list with a deep contusion in his left forearm which just sounds painful to type. The catcher has struggled this season hitting a paltry .172 with 5 home runs and 13 RBI in 48 games.
