Every now and then, sports figures are asked questions that they really have no business answering, but they bite and give an answer when they would have been better off just staying quite. Unfortunately for tennis star Serena Williams, that came on Tuesday when she commented on the Steubenville, Ohio rape case that landed multiple high school football players in juvenile prison, during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, via Deadspin.
Williams commented on the rape victim and her comments were less than flattering. If she would have thought before speaking, she would have realized that those comments would land her in hot water.
“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don’t take drinks from other people,” she told the magazine.
“She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
Williams’ interview with Deadspin has yet to be published, but you can expect the comments to gain more attention from mainstream media once they are out for the world to see.
It is really unfortunate that Williams commented on the case, but she made the choice to open her mouth and now she must deal with the backlash.
