The Enterprise of Annoyance: Teens Are Killing an Industry

Most times I go to the movies anymore, I leave angry. Sometimes I’m angry because the movie I paid to see was bad or sometimes I’m angry because some people were loud throughout the entire movie. However, anytime I leave the theater in a pissed off mood I can point my finger at one element of the movie going experience.

The really annoying teenagers that caused the shitty movie to be made and the annoyance of listening to whatever stupidity they choose to talk about.

I myself am a teenager, but I am ashamed at how generation is ruining movies for everyone. But you ask, ‘How can teenagers, ruin an industry, there just kids?’ ‘So yeah they are annoying in the movie theater, but so are most kids, you can’t blame them for the material your watching on screen.’

Well there’s the issue, these snot nosed kids do control what gets put out in theaters. It sucks, we can’t watch that many good movies because films are made to get the 13 and older demographic. I mean think of that kind of control that my generation has, we now choose exactly the kind of movies we want to see. But how did this happen?

Well it started with Michael Bay.

Ah, Michael Bay, the perfect Hollywood director. I am not a big fan of his work but it fascinates me how he can make a movie that will make so much money even though it is so shitty. Even on pure entertainment levels, I can’t fully enjoy his films because I feel talked down to, like if I am an idiot and can’t understood the complexity of two robots fighting. I still see him as more than a capable director and he can’t be a moron if he can make impressive action sequence after impressive action sequence though. However we come to the point that the generation that videotapes crimes they commit and then posts it on Facebook or YouTube, love his films. His action sequences, while impressive, are still very nonsensical and they seem like there made for kids with ADD. All of his female characters are extremely attractive and the camera follows them in the areas most teenage boys want to see. Finally the stories are so simple that a five year old could follow it with no problem. There is no substance, it’s all just explosions and TNA. While this can be viewed for simple escapist entertainment, almost every movie coming out now follows this formula. It’s a little annoying that I can’t go to the movies anymore to watch an actual good movie, not an escapist film.

If you want someone to blame, don’t blame Hollywood. It’s not their fault that these kind of films are successful. People go out to see it, teenagers especially. These annoying kids ruin it for the rest of us. It’s good sometimes to go watch a movie that is not complex in anyway but entertaining nonetheless, but there needs to be a balance. I don’t blame Michael Bay for tapping into an unlimited source of revenue for his films, but I just wish there could be more than just Transformers, Battleship, or Fast and Furious.

Well the next generation will pick up the pieces and bring movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark back to the silver screen. In the meantime, I’m gonna have to deal the with the douchebags behind me kicking my seat, texting, and talking throughout the movie.

“Sigh” I remember when it was fun to go to the movies.
