Adrien Broner defeated Paul Malignaggi in a split decision in front of a crowd of 11,461 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Broner had previously promised to knock out Malignaggi but failed to deliver. Broner won the WBA Welterweight Title from Malignaggi.
The split decision had the defending champ a little bitter and disgruntled.
“I outworked him throughout the fight,” said Malignaggi, via BoxingScene.com. “It came down to work ethic and the pace that I carried throughout the fight.”
“I’m the defending world champion and I don’t think he did enough to take the titler from me, especially since I’m fighting in my hometown. I was the defending champion.”
But we can forgive him for his saltiness as his opponent goes over the top with his bragging over the victory.
“He couldn’t hit me,” Broner said. “He kept running from me and I had to cut the ring off. All he was doing was shadow-boxing. I came into his hometown and took his title and his girl.”
No word on whether the girlfriend actually went to Broner. But Broner did win a title.
Broner also promised to let the fans decide his next opponent.
“(Because) I do this for the fans, I will let the fans choose my next opponent. Whoever my fans put in front of me with the highest percentage is who I will fight.”
