It’s sounding more and more likely that San Antonio Spurs swingman Kawhi Leonard will miss Team USA’s training camp in Las Vegas this July.
The former San Diego State Aztec has been battling a sore left knee since essentially the start of the season (it’s something that has bothered him since his collegiate days) and given the extended playoff run and shortened offseason, Lenoard may have to sit things out to risk any further damage.
“I need to talk to Kawhi and the doctors about that before we make a decision,” Popovich said. “It’s obviously an honor to be involved with USA Basketball in any way, shape or form.
“Kawhi is thrilled by the selection, but we need to talk to the doctors to make sure he’s able to do it.”
The knee, which has tendinitis in it, is considered “jumper’s knee” and it’s an injury that forced Leonard to miss over 20 games this past season.
