It appears as if the rumors have held true – Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks will be demoted to the minor leagues in the near future, this according to Nick Cafardo.

Looks like Will middlebrooks may be heading down to Pawtucket. First baseman Snyder may be coming up.

Middlebrooks emerged on the scene as a can’t miss prospect last year and lived up to the hype, posting gaudy numbers in his first fifty plus games as a Major Leaguer. However, injuries combined with slumps have derailed his season and now the Red Sox, who have hinted they may send down the young infielder appear to have followed through with their threats.

Middlebrooks is batting just .192 with 9 homers and a 60/9 K/BB ratio in 53 games this season and has struggled to beat out fellow infielder Jose Iglesias for playing time.

The club has yet to make an official announcement and there are no suggestions on how long Middlebrooks is expected to remain on the farm, though, I’d expect him to return once it appears he has his swing back.
