It was pretty much a forgone conclusion that the Miami Heat would exercise their team option on point guard Mario Chalmers and today they did just that, meaning the former Jayhawk will be in South Beach for at least one more season.
Per Tim Reynolds:
Riley says Heat will keep Chalmers.
While keeping Chalmers under contract was an obvious move, one move that might not be so obvious is keeping Mike Miller.
With the Heat currently paying pretty heavily into the NBA’s luxury tax and Ray Allen wanting to increase his salary, the franchise may need to save some money and could do so by cutting Miller. Due $6.2 million this season with a $6.6 million player option for next season, releasing Miller could save the Heat over $14 million dollars in luxury tax money next year. The Heat would stay have to pay Miller of course, but avoiding the hefty luxury tax might be something the Heat feel as a necessary evil.
