Maria Sharapova’s Wimbledon run didn’t last long. While she made it past the first-round unlike Rafael Nadal, Sharapova was eliminated in Round 2 of the tournament. Sharapova was upset by 19-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito, 6-3, 6-4.
Larcher de Brito is currently ranked No. 131.
The No. 3 seed called for a trainer after the second set and needed to be stretched out. She left the court for nearly ten minutes before returning, but she was never able to find her groove and de Brito took control.
Sharapova, who was dealing with a hip injury, had her fair share of issues throughout the match, but she was able to save four match points in the final game before losing to the Portuguese underdog.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Victoria Azarenka and John Isner left Wimbledon with injuries of their own, so the tournament has had it’s fair share of casualties.
With Sharapova and Azarenka out of the way, the road to another Wimbledon championship just got that much easier for the clear favorite Serena Williams.
