Former Seattle Supersonics and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan was hoping for a return at the helm this offseason but will have to settle for second fiddle in Indiana.

According to Yahoo Sports, McMillan is closed to finalizing a deal which will make him the lead assistant on Frank Vogel’s coaching staff.

Nate McMillan is finalizing an agreement to become the top assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers, league sources tell Y! Sports.

McMillan interviewed for a handful of head coaching vacancies earlier this month but despite being named as a finalist in multiple jobs, McMillan was passed over.

After spending last season in Oklahoma City, the former Sonics guard is expected to replace Brian Shaw in Indiana after Shaw took the head coaching job with the Denver Nuggets.

McMillan, a 12-year NBA veteran as a player, went 478-452 in 12 years as a head coach during his two stops in Portland and Seattle.

In addition to his previous head coaching gigs, McMillan has also worked with Team USA Basketball.
