The New England Patriots fan base was hit hard with the Aaron Hernandez news over the past few weeks, but they have some reason to smile now thanks to the Patriots organization. New England acted swiftly and released Hernandez, but now the team is going the extra mile and helping out the fans who emptied their wallets to purchase a Hernandez jersey when he inked the $40 million extension last summer.

From Field Yates of ESPN Boston:

This is certainly something that we have never seen from a team before, but it was a great move.

New England is trying to ride themselves of ties to Hernandez, so this will certainly help out. Of course, you will have some boneheaded fans that will think it is still funny to rock an Aaron Hernandez jersey around town and you’ll have those that go scoop one up from Goodwill or eBay for cheap to exchange for a free jersey, but this is the right move from New England.

In fact, this is something that the Atlanta Falcons should have done back with the Michael Vick situation.

Brilliant decision by the Patriots marketing firm on this one. Kudos.
