When NBA Free Agency kicks off at 12:01 a.m. ET, there will be a lot of interest in NBA Sixth Man of the Year J.R. Smith. It has been no secret that Smith hopes to return to the New York Knicks this season, but there could be a lot of competition and some higher offers that could pull Smith away from Madison Square Garden.
Among the teams reportedly interested in Smith are the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons.
From the New York Post:
According to a person who spoke to Smith, the explosive but flaky shooting guard believes he will get an offer that will top the Knicks’ maximum bid — starting at $5.4 million — under early-Bird-rights bylaws.
The Knicks believe odds are they will retain J.R. Smith, but it hardly is a guarantee considering the bevy of under-the-cap clubs and a weak free-agent class. The Bucks, Pistons and Suns are contemplating throwing money Smith’s way.
The rumors and interest will continue to heat up over the next 24 hours, with the official start of free agency just around the corner.
