Apparently, Monta Ellis couldn’t get out of Milwaukee fast enough as the free agent opted out of his contract with the Bucks the first moment he could.
Now, Ellis is hoping to find a lucrative deal with a team who strikes out in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes.
While both the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks are considered to be in the mix for Howard, they’re not his favorite (at least not today – that could change) and both teams have apparent backup plans if Howard was to spurn them. The plan? Monta Ellis.
According to USA Today, both the Hawks and Mavericks have interest in Ellis and the feeling is mutual:
The Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks — both teams with significant salary cap space — are two teams who have shown strong interest in Ellis and two teams Ellis has an interest in, according to multiple people with direct knowledge of Ellis’ situation.
They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about free agents.
Ellis isn’t exactly the type of guy you want to break the bank for so I could see Dallas backing off, though with Atlanta almost completely void of any salary, they could make an expensive Ellis signing potentially workout with the correct pieces added around him.
