The Charlotte Bobcats elected not to offer big man Byron Mullens a qualifying offer last week, making the former Ohio State big man an unrestricted free agent.
Knowing that, the Los Angeles Lakers contacted the four year NBA veteran with hopes of luring him West last evening.
Per Dave McMenamin:
The Lakers also inquired about Charlotte free agent Byron Mullens on Sunday night, per a league source.
Mullens’ skill set, a big man with perimeter game would fit wonderfully in the Lakers system, especially off of the bench in addition to filling in for a potential traded and/or injured Pau Gasol.
Given the premium on big man however, defensively challenged or not, it’s tough to see the Lakers affording him as he’ll eat into what little cap space they have available. The best option might be a sign and trade situation that allows the Lakers to keep their limited cap space and gets the Cats something in return for the former Buckeye.
Mullens averaged nearly 11 points and 6 rebounds in 27 minutes a game last year.
