The San Antonio Spurs said last week that they were unsure if they would be able to keep Tiago Splitter, so rather than risk losing the restricted free agent for nothing the Spurs are in trade discussions that will send him to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for center Marcin Gortat – this according to Jordan Schultz of the Huffington Post and NBC Sports Radio:
Source: Spurs-Suns deal 4 Gortat would either be n a Splitter sign-and-trade or Diaw/filler. Suns get at least a 2014 1st rounder either way
The report should be taken with a grain (maybe more a rock) of salt as Schultz, though a writer for a credible news organization, doesn’t exactly have a history of reporting breaking news stories.
The actual trade sounds completely reasonable (the Gortat part, not the Diaw) given the Suns all but said Gortat was not part of their future and the Spurs wouldn’t want to lose Splitter for nothing. Still, take it with some skepticism until it’s reported by a bigger named source.
For now, it’s just one of many rumors that is likely to result in a quick death.
