One of the more interesting quarterback controversies to present itself this offseason has been down in Tampa with Josh Freeman and Mike Glennon. While the Buccaneers took Freeman back in 2009 with the 19th overall pick, he hasn’t lived up to the full expectations Matthew Stafford seems to be living up to and he’s falling more towards where Mark Sanchez is at right now.

So with Freeman entering a contract season, the Buccaneers shocked the world when they drafted the highly rated prospect Mike Glennon with their third round draft pick this year. However while this looks like Schiano pushing Freeman out of a job with the Bucs, the head coach insisted that Freeman is the only quarterback the team has.

“We only have one,” Schiano said, via NFL.com and NFL Network’s Total Access. “It’s Josh Freeman.”

Many believe that Schiano has been rough on Freeman because he was a quarterback he inherited from former head coach Raheem Morris. But Freeman’s struggles are his own and if Schiano wants to put pressure on him in his contract season, that’s a coaching decision. But he’s not saying Freeman is his guy simply to kiss up to Freeman as there couldn’t be more truth in what Schiano was saying.

Mike Glennon is not ready to start and he won’t start, at least it doesn’t look that way now. He could beat out Freeman in training camp and the preseason but as it stands now Freeman has the most experience and gives the Bucs the best chance to win. He’s quite literally the only quarterback the Bucs have.
