The Cubs have signed top international prospect Elroy Jimenez. His contract includes a 2.8 million dollar bonus, as well as a 250,000 dollar college scholarship.
The 16 year old Jimenez has been considered by many to be the crown jewel of the 2013 international draft class. Both Baseball America and MLB.com have Jimenez listed as the top prospect of the draft class. According to MLB.com, Jimenez “has one of the best baseball bodies available this year and is considered to be the total package. The teenager has impressed scouts with his intelligence, plus-speed, and gap-to-gap power that is expected to improve as he grows into his body.”
The Cubs’ were also able to sign the number 2 prospect in the daft (according to Baseball America, third according to MLB.com) Gleyber Torres due to the amount of international money they got in the trade for Scott Feldman.
These two acquisitions give the Cubs the 2 best prospects of the international draft, and have them poised for a bright future at both shortstop and outfield. Both Torres and Jimenez will join stud prospect Javier Baez in the Cubs’ strong minor league system, which should mean a bright future for the struggling Cubs.
