The Dallas Cowboys have a secret superstar on defense in middle linebacker Sean Lee and clearly owner Jerry Jones and Co. know it as the team is expected to give Lee a contract extension before the season kicks off.
Lee has had his fair share of injuries, including an ACL tear in 2008 and a torn ligament in his toe last season, but when healthy he is arguably one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys are expected to hit Lee with an extension sooner rather than later:
Look for Lee to get a long-term contract extension before the beginning of the season. The Cowboys are looking for him to be a leader of this defense for a long time.
Lee has recorded over 160 tackles in his last 21 contests alone. At the age of 26 with his rookie deal expiring, the team would be smart to lock him up long-term before he has a chance to find his way to the free-agent market.
Dallas is switching to a new defense and needs a leader for years to come during the transition. Lee is that leader, but only if a long-term agreement can be reached and he can stay healthy.
