The college football rivalry series between West Virginia and Virginia Tech is set to resume in nine years.
Currently, just one home-and-home series has been scheduled. Both teams will play in Morgantown in 2021 and in Blacksburg in 2022. Specific dates were not announced.
Last time both teams played each other was back in 2005 when both the Mountaineers and Hokies were in the Big East. Virginia Tech took the last game with a 34-17 victory on September 18, 2005. West Virginia currently leads the all-time series, 28-22-1.
Both athletic directors commented on the news today via The Sports Xchange. West Virginia AD Oliver Luck knew that the fanbase wanted the rivalry back.
“This game is great for college football. We all know that the two schools have extraordinary fan bases, and both schools will be counting down the days until the Hokies and the Mountaineers meet again.”
Virginia Tech AD Jim Weaver expressed the same sentiment.
“I am pleased we are able to resume the rivalry between Virginia Tech and West Virginia and have every belief that this rivalry will flourish and be good for college football[.]“
