The Dallas Mavericks lost out on the Dwight Howard sweepstakes. But Mark Cuban is done with one year and expiring deals and trying to land huge free agents, he is ready to put together a team to win now.

They started by signing former Toronto Raptor and Detroit Pistons point guard Jose Calderon. The point guard got a 4 year deal worth $29 million. The Mavs had been trying to sign players to one year deals or acquiring expiring contracts so they could hold on cap space in the summer to land ‘big fish’ free agents.

They’re abandoning that model and looking to make their team better for the long run, Calderon’s 4 year deal is the first sign of that. The Dallas Mavericks likely will swiftly work towards signing new free agents and making trades to put a roster together around Dirk Nowitzki to get back into the playoffs.
