NBA Trade Rumors – The Sacramento Kings are interested in Monta Ellis, but need to create cap room in order to sign the trigger-happy guard. To do so, the team is trying to send Jimmer Fredette and Chuck Hayes to the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to ESPN.
Sources say that the Kings, meanwhile, have been shopping the likes of Jimmer Fredette and Chuck Hayes to the Cavaliers to create the requisite salary-cap room to try to sign Ellis comfortably. Hard to see Cleveland wanting Hayes, whose contract runs through 2014-15 and thus potentially cuts into Cleveland’s reserves earmarked for a free-agent run at LeBron James next summer. Fredette’s $2.4 million salary is a virtual expiring deal.
Ever since the Kings hired Mike Malone, there have been rumors that Ellis could potentially reunite with a coach he is familiar with. Now that the rumors seem to be picking up steam, Sacramento is looking to move some contracts.
Just like the ESPN report says, it’s hard to imagine Cleveland taking on Chuck Hayes’ contract, although Fredette could potentially be a good fit on a young roster.
Sacramento’s interest in Ellis is a little puzzling, especially considering that the team drafted Ben McLemore in this year’s draft and developing him should be the priority.
