The Dallas Mavericks have struck out pretty hard during the last two offseasons, missing out on both Deron Williams in 2012 and Dwight Howard in 2013 (we wont count Chris Paul). So off to Plan B they go, which isn’t nearly as sexy.
Donnie Nelson said that they are “in discussion” with Elton Brand and Brandan Wright to stay with the Mavs.
Brand has recieved a fair amount of interest on the open market, though, his apparent desire for a well paying contract has limited him as the teams who did show interest lacked much financial flexibility. That could lean to a potential Dallas return.
There’s no word on what type of contracts the Mavericks would be offering, though, the Mavericks intend to be big players in the 2014 free agent frenzy and certainly wont want to commit much long term money to either Brand or Wright. It’s possible the two sides could agree to one year deals, leaving the Mavs with cap flexibility and allowing both players to attempt for another deal next year.
