The Oakland Athletics are looking to bolster their bullpen, so they are looking to Triple-A Sacramento for their answer. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A’s are calling up top pitching prospect Sonny Gray. Gray was selected No. 18 overall in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft.
The following year, Gray was ranked 65th on Baseball America‘s list of the Top 100 prospects for the 2012 season. This year he failed to make the list, but he will finally get his chance.
During his time in the Pacific Coast League, Gray racked up a 2.81 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 107/34 K/BB ratio in 16 starts.
While he is starting in the bullpen, there is a chance that Gray could work his way in to the starting rotation if the A’s need a boost. Until then, he will work to get comfortable working out of the bullpen, which is something he has not done before.
