Earlier this morning it was reported that the Dallas Mavericks had spoken to Greg Oden, even before their attempts to lure Andrew Bynum to Big D. We weren’t sure if there was any mutual interest, but according to Marc Stein, Oden plans to give the Mavericks ‘legit consideration’ along with San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Hearing: Dallas Mavs will get “legit consideration” from Greg Oden along with teams previously in his top three: Heat, Spurs and Cavs
We know the Mavs struck out on ‘plan A’. Jose Calderon was apparently ‘plan B’, so I’m not sure what letter in the alphabet this plan is – though we might be running out of letters.
Oden has reportedly looked “fantastic” during workouts but has there ever been a workout from an injured player who didn’t look “fantastic”? They’re pretty much like surgeries – they’re always ‘successful’.
In fairness to the Mavericks, there’s little risk here assuming Oden does sign a cheap deal. But it’s clear that the former number one overall pick is doing his best to drum up interest and to start a (all be it, small) bidding war for his services.
