The Dallas Cowboys continue to have some major problems in the secondary, but they are hoping a slight mix up can help things improve at least a little bit. According to the Cowboys official website, the team plans to start Barry Church at free safety, after he’s seen extensive time as an in-the-box strong safety throughout his career.

While Church may not be the best fit at free safety, he is the team’s best option.

Behind Church, the team has only Danny McCray and Brandon Underwood. To make matters worse, their current strong safety situation is not any better.

At strong safety, the trio of Will Allen, Matt Johnson and J.J. Wilcox will compete.

Wilcox has the most potential out of the group, but he has zero experience in the NFL.

Dallas hopes to see their defensive unit improve this season after bringing in new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and switching to the 4-3, Tampa 2 scheme, but the team’s safeties could end up being a strong liability.

It could be interesting to watch opponents attacking the safeties throughout the season.
