The San Diego Padres have had an embarrassing stretch that has ultimately resulted in the team willing to act as sellers on the MLB trade market as the deadline approaches.
The unsurprising news of the Padres willingness to let go of talent such as Chase Headley and Edison Volquez was reported on by CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler:
The Padres still aren’t eager to move Headley, and it would take a big offer for a team to have a chance to get him. A more likely scenario would have the Padres trading some of their bullpen arms (Huston Street, anyone?) and/or starter Edinson Volquez.
Of course the Padres are sellers at 42-54, but it is hard to see the team willing to let go of Headley. San Diego needs to keep some sort of core to go into next season competitive, not to mention in order to stay competitive for the second half this year.
San Diego can do away with some talent and build for the future, but the decision-makers have to be careful to not over-do it and hurt the fortunes of the franchise for a long time.
