Steven Gerrard is entering the last year of his contract with Liverpool, but he has no intention of leaving the club and is close to signing an extension.
“The Liverpool captain has entered the final year of his current deal but talks have progressed smoothly and Gerrard, whose glittering Anfield career will be celebrated with a testimonial against Olympiakos on August 3, is on the verge of putting pen to paper.
Liverpool opened talks with Gerrard and his advisors in the spring but there has never been a suggestion of him going elsewhere and the 33-year-old, who sat out Saturday’s 4-0 win over Preston, said in May “it was only a matter of time” before the business was concluded.”
There was really no doubt that Gerrard, who has spent his whole youth and professional career with Liverpool, would agree to a contract extension.
While the team’s captain might be locked up very soon and is likely to finish his career with the club, there is still a lot of uncertainty around Luis Suarez. The club has previously said that Suarez will stay, although the player wants to leave Anfield and several clubs are willing to pay a nifty price for the enigmatic striker.
