Marcus Smart, who surprised many pundits when he decided to forgo the 2013 NBA Draft to return to Oklahoma State for his sophomore season, spoke in a statement released by the university today about being the only non-NBA player to be invited to the Team USA mini-camp.
It is a great honor to be invited to participate with the USA Men’s National Team. The other players at the mini-camp are NBA professionals who I look up to and respect. I’m excited to learn from them and to compete against them.
Smart has experience playing against international teams, having led the Team USA U-18 and U-19 squads to victories the last two summers.
Travis Ford, Smart’s coach for the Cowboys, also spoke about the opportunity:
We’re very excited for Marcus. It’s an incredible honor to be the lone college player to be selected. It’s a great honor for him and our program. He continues to represent us in a first-class manner, both on and off the court.
Smart and the 28 other players selected will begin the camp on July 22nd and conclude events with a scrimmage, the 2013 USA Basketball Showcase, on July25th at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Arena .
