Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney is set to return to competition later this month on July 27 at the Secret U.S. Classic. The event will be held in Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Maroney will be joined by “Fierce Five” teammate Kyla Ross. The Secret U.S. Classic takes place just three weeks before nationals.
For Maroney, the Chicago event is her first since suffering a fractured tibia during the team’s post-Olympic tour. Since the injury, Maroney has stayed in the public eye, especially on social media, before returning to her training.
According to the 17-year-old Maroney, she has been training six hours a day Monday through Friday, with five hour days on Saturdays and Sunday is the day off. Talk about a heavy work load.
While Maroney and Ross are returning to action in just over a week, the US women’s gymnastics team captain Aly Raisman is in Israel for the Maccabiah Games.
The two remaining “Fierce Five” mebers, Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber, do not have return dates set. Wieber has resumed training with her coach, while Douglas is expected to pick up her work outs later this year.
