The Dallas Mavericks are serious about increasing the talent they have under the hoop in this NBA free agency period. That much was made apparent when the team showed interest in both Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum.
With both of those names off the market, the team has lowered its expectations and wants to land both Greg Oden and Samuel Dalembert.
The report comes from Marc Stein of ESPN:
The Mavericks, sources say, were scheduled to meet Monday with Oden and are still holding out hope of signing both him and Samuel Dalembert to fill their center void after missing out on top target Dwight Howard.
Dallas lost out on both of its high-priority targets and is now going to have to settle for either an injury-laden Oden or an aging veteran in Dalembert—or both.
It makes sense for Dallas to pursue both. While Dalembert does not have the biggest list of potential clients, Oden is being heavily pursued by a variety of teams. If Dallas can land both, the defense under the rim should at lease be sound for next season.
That’s a big if.
