ESPY Awards 2013: Serena Williams Named Best Female Athlete

Women’s tennis star, Serena Williams, won the Best Female Athlete award at the 2013 ESPY Awards.

Williams beat out Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin, and 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball champion Brittney Griner.

Given the number one ranking in the world last July, Williams still retains it today. She’s comeback through multiple injuries throughout her career and has consistently topped the women’s rankings.

Her biggest rivalry is against her sister, Venus Williams. Serena holds a 14-10 edge all-time against her sister, and has defeated her six times in eight Grand Slam championships.

While it’s been a struggle with Venus on coming back with injury and illness filled in 2012, her sister has still had success despite an early exit at the previous Wimbledon tournament.

Williams edged out Douglas who won two gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Franklin who won four gold medals (five total) at the Olympics and is the same age as Douglas, and Griner who dominated women’s college basketball during her career.

Serena was not at the event due to playing in a tournament at the time.
