Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel has been feeling the full weight of the media after leaving the Manning Passing Academy early. Despite the fact that Peyton Manning has defended him and his father said it was due to dehydration.
“I made a mistake and didn’t wake up in time when I should have, and that’s pretty much the end of that,” Manziel said. “It was just simply my phone died, I overslept.”
Manziel’s reputation has the media suspecting other potential reasons. For instance during all this he plead guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from a bar fight.
“I’m still a sophomore in college, I’m still going to do things that everybody in college does and I’m going to continue to enjoy my life,” Manziel explained. “Hopefully people don’t hold me to a higher standard than that.”
But when asked about whether he was dismissed from camp because of alcohol consumption he declined to answer.
“I’m not going into details about what happened at the Manning camp,” Manziel said. “We had social events every night.”
But he insists that he was “absolutely not” hungover when he missed the meeting that resulted in his dismissal. When you come under fire for partying to often these criticisms are expected. And when you’re a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback at a prestigious football school, in arguably the most prestigous football conference you have to expect the spotlight to shine brighter on you.
Unfortunately, as the face of a multi-million dollar football machine, Manziel is going to have to learn that the rules and expectations for him are different than the average college student.
