The plan is for Carpenter to take the ball on Saturday in what will be his second rehab start. He began his rehab assignment with 2.2 innings of work in a start for Double-A Springfield on Monday. In that outing, it was reported that Carpenter reached 94 mph on the stadium gun, though his command was poor, as could be expected after such a long layoff between live outings.
Carpenter has missed the entire season while recovering from back and shoulder injuries. He was limited to just three starts in 2012, though he did return to play a prominent role in the Cardinals run to the National League Championship Series last season.
It is expected that Carpenter will make multiple starts with Memphis and is likely to use the entirety of his 30-day rehab assignment before re-joining the Cardinals, assuming no set-backs, of course. There has been speculation that Carpenter could be used in relief upon his return. He has made just one relief appearance in nine seasons with the Cardinals.
