Comic-Con Recap: Day One

Unsurprisingly, there wasn’t a whole lot of groundbreaking news from the first day of Comic-Con. But that doesn’t mean there’s not some good stuff to talk about! We’ve got brand new info on super sleuths, mutant-hunting robots, and more from today’s panels, all gathered together here on Fansided for your reading pleasure (and without wading through a sea of costumed fans at the San Diego Convention Center)!

As our own Josh Sanchez relayed just hours ago, the Sherlock panel was among the big hits of Day One primarily due to the “presence” (via pre-recorded video) of stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. For a full report on that video, check out Josh’s original post here. According to MTV, creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis revealed very little about the upcoming third season other than that it will be debuting in early 2014 and that fans should really look forward to the Watson-Sherlock reunion scene. As I mentioned in my preview, Sherlock is one of my favorite shows on television, and I absolutely cannot wait for the new episodes.

Also of note from today’s action was a bit of a teaser for one of Fox’s most anticipated upcoming movies, X-Men: Days of Future Past. A mini-exhibit outside the SD Convention Center gave the world its first look at the Sentinels, giant robots created by Trask Industries – the company run by Peter Dinklage’s character – to (if the film stays in line with the comic storyline that inspired its title) enslave mutants in a dystopian future. Because the brief tease Brett Ratner gave us in X-Men: The Last Stand doesn’t count, this is the first time these mutant-hunters will be legitimately brought to live action. Throughout the history of the X-Men, the Sentinels have been a constant threat, and it’s a shock they haven’t been a part of the X-movie universe until now. The giant intelligent robots are the perfect antagonist for the big-screen team – it’s hard to feel bad about your favorite mutants unleashing their full power against a hunk of metal, plus they’re tough to destroy, which means we may get to see the teamwork that can make the X-Men so much fun. And as far as I’m concerned, the Sentinel head they had on display is a really good start (Cinema Blend has some good shots of it here). It may not alleviate my worries about the super-sized cast being too big for its own good, but at least that major element is looking promising.

Other highlights included new footage from the Batman: Arkham Origins video game that’s set to come out in October (plus the reveal that Batgirl will be making an appearance in some form) and the Ender’s Game panel, with Harrison Ford  in attendance, releasing a brand new trailer for the audience. As far as I know, that trailer hasn’t made its way online yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

Those are the major stories from Thursday. Check back tomorrow night for a recap of day two – the fun is just beginning!
