It was announced earlier that the Dallas Mavericks and free agent center Samuel Dalembert had reached a verbal agreement earlier this week. Now head coach Rick Carlisle has confirmed it, via a text message.
“We are glad to have Sam on board,” Carlisle texted, via ESPN Dallas. “He is a rebounder/rim protector who I believe is a bit underrated offensively. He’s by far the best unrestricted free-agent center available at this time.”
Yahoo! Sports had previously reported that the deal was expected to be a two year deal with the second year partially guaranteed. You could essentially call Dalembert the Maverick’s third option at center, after having missed out on Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum.
The only center the Mavericks have on the roster besides Dalembert is Bernard James, that would pencil in Dalembert as the starter. That’s a huge increase in playing time from the 16.3 minutes per game.
The Mavericks are still negotiating with forward/center Brandan Wright. They could start him at center as well. But nevertheless, Dallas is lacking depth near the rim.
