The St. Louis Cardinals have placed outfielder Matt Holliday on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to July 12th, with a strained right hamstring injury.

He was able to take batting practice for the 2nd straight day on Friday, but was still dealing with lingering tightness in his hamstring. The Cardinals didn’t want to take any chances, so he will continue to sit out.

Holliday could return to the 1st place St. Louis Cardinals lineup on July 27th when he becomes eligible. His 1st game back would be against the Atlanta Braves in the 2nd game of a 3 game series that begins July 26th. After the Cardinals finish that series, they fly out to Pittsburgh and go head to head with the 2nd place Pittsburgh Pirates in a 4 game series starting July 29th.

The 33 year old is batting a career .310, batting .268 this season with 13 home runs and 47 RBI’s.

Meanwhile, the team purchased the contract of 29 year old Brock Peterson, a 1st baseman/outfielder who was a Pacific Coast All-Star at Triple-A Memphis. They purchased his contract just in time for tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres.

He was batting .306 and led the Pacific Coast League with 22 home runs to go with his 66 RBI’s in just 93 games.

Peterson will make his major league debut tonight against the Padres.
