As a person who was frequently hit by pitches in my Little League days, Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister is having the type of season that would give me nightmares.
Fister has hit 14 batters this season, his latest victim being Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez. Fister is on pace to plunk 23 batters in 2013, a number that would set the record for most hit batters since 1947. (The current record is 21, shared by Kerry Wood and Tom Murphy).
Fister’s Leela-esque season won’t approach the all-time record, though. Phil Knell of the Columbus Solons (remember them?) hit an astonishing 54 batters back in 1891 in what must have been a bloodbath of a year. The last time a pitcher hit 23 batters in a season was back in 1922 (Howard Ehmke, also of the Detroit Tigers).
The best Fister can hope for now is for Teddy “Beanbag” Bagwell to come out of retirement and make a plate appearance. At least he wouldn’t complain about being drilled with a fastball (and then Eric’s signed photo would actually be worth something!).
