The Arizona Diamondbacks need an upgrade to the pitching rotation as the MLB trade deadline approaches, but the powers running the franchise want a pitcher they can control for a long time.
That means no Matt Garza, Jake Peavy or Bud Norris, all elite pitches that would come at a high price—and also have a chance to leave town sooner rather than later.
The news comes from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports(who else?) on his latest edition of Full Count.
The Diamondbacks would much rather look for a guy like Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox or even Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago Cubs. Both are younger options with longer contracts that would not be a massive threat to leave as soon as their deals expire.
Arizona is clearly intent on not giving up major trade pieces for a rental. It’s up to the market itself to ultimately decided how it plays out. It may come down to Arizona not making any moves at all.
