The New York Jets have a quarterback competition on their hand. It has been Mark Sanchez, the incumbent, who has been more vocal about the situation. He has repeated over and over that he is confident he’ll win the job, even saying he’d bet on himself.

Geno Smith is finally speaking out on his chances, and he is confident as well.

“I feel like I have a great shot,” Smith said, via the Charleston Gazette. “I did a pretty good job overall of just adapting to the [Jets’] system and playbook and felt very comfortable with it by the end of OTAs and mandatory camp.”

Geno was in West Virginia for a signing at Collectibles, Inc. in Cross Lanes.

“Going into training camp I’ve got a great opportunity and feel very good about it,” Smith said. “I’m going to go in there with the right mentality, the same mentality I had throughout my entire career, which is to work hard, to better myself and help my teammates get better and we’ll see what happens at the end of preseason.”

Geno Smith might be at a disadvantage having not attended “Jets West.” But Sanchez said it was “no big deal.

“Right now it’s time to get to work,” Smith said.
