Jason Campbell opens Cleveland Browns training camp as primary backup

There was no doubt that Brandon Weeden would enter the 2012-13 NFL season as the team’s starter, but there was some debate about who would be the primary back up quarterback. There is some belief that the team could only carry two quarterbacks in to the start of the season, so the loser of the back up race could be on the outs.

For Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer, that means a heated camp battle is about to take place. Unfortunately for Hoyer, Campbell has opened camp in the No. 2 role.

From Tom Reed of the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

It is not a big surprise that Campbell opens as the primary back up, but things could get interesting if Hoyer begins to show the flashes of brilliance that many have been seeing in Hoyer that has resulted in him receiving opportunity after opportunity.

Browns rookies reported to training camp on July 19, while the veterans report on July 24 to kick off their first practices of the season.

browns fans better pray wheedon stays healthy. did anybody besides bears fans see him play against the 49ers last year? tough team for sure but looked as bad as caleb hanie did as a backup for the bears. he was the veteran backup who was supposed to be able to step in without the bears missing a beat. he was beyond awful!
