The first domino in the Biogenesis PED scandal fell yesterday when Ryan Braun was suspended for the remainder of the season without pay. That prompted Alex Rodriguez to begin negotiating with MLB for his own deal. Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz on the other hand is playing on as if nothing has happened.
“I guess it is what it is,” Cruz said after Monday’s game against the Yankees, via ESPN Dallas. “I don’t have any comment.”
“I’m playing the same way,” Cruz said. “We’re playing to win. We’re in the race, so I come to the ballpark thinking about winning. So that’s my goal.”
ESPN “Outside the Lines” reporter T.J. Quinn reported on Monday that the rest of those players connected to Biogenesis can expect suspensions as well. Those will be announced all at once.
Cruz hit his 23rd home run of the season last night as the Rangers shut out A-Rod’s club, the Yankees. If Cruz is innocent his stance makes sense, if he knows a suspension is coming he might be wise to follow A-Rod’s lead and pursue a deal of his own. That or maybe he has caught wind of what potential punishment is going to be handed down and he’s decided it isn’t too severe.
